20×200
September 30, 2007 // Art + Internet + Photography

Trying a different way of doing things, 20×200 is a new project where they release 200 editions of a photo or painting, at $20 a piece. This makes the art affordable, but still collectible. But they also offer larger prints for $200 in editions of 20, and if you’re feeling really rich, you could maybe get one of two limited edition, large prints for $2000.
This is such a great idea, I can’t believe this isn’t some sort of standard by now. I really love the photo above by Kelly Shimoda called ‘Untitled (Hanoi no.2)’. I’m a fan of night photography, and this is a stunning example.
They release new prints on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 2PM, so be sure to mark your calender!

Best Friends
September 30, 2007 // Life + Photography

This is my best friend Garrett and I. I’m on the left, if you weren’t sure.
We took this at the Swerve Festival earlier today.
We have a tendency to do buck teeth in all the pictures we take together. That’s what happens when you know someone for 16 years. And I have no idea what’s supposed to be going on in the photo. Like a happy couple on a cloud outside their living room?!
No matter what, it’s genius to me.

Layer Tennis: Shaun Inman vs. Kevin Cornell
September 30, 2007 // Art + Design + Illustration + Internet

Last Friday, Coudal started their exciting Layer Tennis again, having Shaun Inman face up against Kevin Cornell with John Gruber of Daring Fireball provide the commentary. The whole thing was pretty interesting. From the start Cornell was definitely doing better, his images and tweaks were definitely more exciting. But in the end, Shaun Inman found his stirde and definitely took off, possibly scoring the winning point with his final submission, which you see above, at the bottom.
I’m pretty excited to see this next match, even if it’s half as good as this last one. Be sure to check it out on Friday, starting at 12PM PST.

Akira Club
September 30, 2007 // Books + Comic Books + Illustration

I saw this earlier today when I was in Secret Headquarters and thought I’d give a mention about it. Akira Club is a collection of rare and unseen sketches that went along with the original manga. This is the first time it’s all been collected together in English. I spent some time looking through, and it was really rad to see Otomo’s ideas and thinking in putting together images, as well as the process of getting to a final image.
Definitely worth picking up if you’re a fan of Akira, or amazing illustration in general.

Last Week in LAist – 09/24 to 09/30
September 30, 2007 // Last Week in LAist

Last Week in LAist I posted a few cool things. I posted about a really great Flickr browser that makes it less of a headache, got sidetracked by the amazing art of Chase, and then posted a photo essay about the Swerve Festival, which is where the picture above was taken.
