Dropzone
July 16, 2009 // Technology

Since I went freelance I’ve been looking for handy tools to help me stay organized and be more productive. Usually this means trying out a new program for a few days, maybe a couple weeks, and then I tend to start forgetting about it and eventually delete them. That being said, I came across this really awesome program over on Yewknee that I’m really excited about.
It’s called Dropzone, which is basically an icon that lives in your which has a bubble inside of it. When you click the icon the bubble pops up and inside it can be a number of things. For example, I have three different FTP connections, as well as miscellaneous programs that I use somewhat frequently, but not enough that I’d want to have them cluttering my dock. This way, I don’t have to go into Transmit if I don’t want to, I just click Dropzone and then drop my files onto the correct FTP icon.
Dropzone basically just makes it a little bit easier to get things and allows your dock to stay well organized. You can also do things like upload to Flickr, save text, copy or move files and you can even write your own extensions if that’s your kind of thing. They currently have a free version which allows you to have 5 items, or you can pay $10 and you can put an unlimited amount of things in. Definitely worth the ten bucks, in my opinion.

Well, I have stacks in my dock which are folders where you put documents or whatever, and when you click them they open kind of like this application does (I think you would know what a stack is).
This application is kind of like that, except you also have useful shortcuts/options inside.

Hey Bobby, how do you make your dock shiny black?

I’ve always wondered about the magical floating buttons that the machines at the Apple Store have in the back…
buttons for scheduling an appointment at the Genius Bar and the like.
Ever find anything like that?
