Reading the Stars
August 4, 2009 // Art

I didn’t know this, but 2009 is International Year of Astronomy, which celebrates the 400th anniversary of Galileo using a telescope to study the stars, as well as Kepler’s publication of Astronomia Nova. And in honor of these, Miniature Rhino has created these beautiful little needlepoint constellations set in embroidery hoops. The constellations featured above are Andromeda, Ursa Major, Cygnus and Orion, all done in white thread on vintage blue linen.
There’s something really charming about these, especially seeing them all together like that. My bathroom is all black and white, and I could see these looking awesome next to my two giant Obey posters.

Awesome. And speaking of stars, everyone, I suggest you guys find a cool place (if you haven’t already) because the Perseids Meteor Shower is next week and it’s going to be beauuuutiful! The meteor shower is on Wednesday August 12, 2009. The shower peaks early afternoon on the 12th, so the morning of the 12th (midnight to dawn) and late evening are the best times to watch from the U.S. I’m going camping in Joshua Tree to see them!

Mary Corbet directed me here; I love the constellation embroideries, thank you.
As for the Perseids Meteor Shower, there is no chance of me seeing them today (Wed 12th Aug) as it has been raining since 2am here (NZ)

@ Wendy, sorry to hear about the rain :( Joshua Tree was beautiful, until a bunch of A-Holes showed up and blasted Eminem until 6:30 am and then we were attacked by bees :( But the meteors were gorgeous!
