Kitsune Noir Mixcast / No.014
November 13, 2009 // Kitsune Noir Mixcast

I’m probably asking for trouble with this week’s Mixcast, but what can I say, I like a little excitement. This week’s Mixcast is all about God, Jesus and religious stuffs. A few things to start with… I’m an atheist, but I totally believe that you can believe in whatever you want to believe in, it’s your deal and it’s none of my business. This isn’t meant to be critical of anyone’s religion, it’s just a bunch of fun music put together around a theme. If you take offense to any of it you’re an idiot, and if you try and leave a dumb comment I’m gonna’ delete it.
A lot of music over the years has been inspired by religious stuff and these are some songs that fall into that category. In fact, these are all amazing songs, no matter what their content is about. I’m not sure if this is going to end up being my most loved or most hated mix, but I’m sure it’ll be interesting nonetheless. Enjoy.
Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Personal Jesus by Johnny Cash
King of Carrot Flowers Part 2 & 3 by Neutral Milk Hotel
He’s A Mighty Good Leader by Beck
Gospel Song by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club
Heaven Adores You by Earlimart
Jesus by The Velvet Underground
Rapture by Pedro The Lion
Chariot by Page France
Archangel Tale by M. Ward
Crosses by José González
My Sweet Lord by Yim Yames
Angel in the Snow by The Robot Ate Me
Bobby

`The sun just popped out over Intelligentsia, consider me a warm and happy fellow now.`

I was going to do something similar for a mix tape club I was in a while back. I came up with a mix of songs about either God, the Devil, faith or lack thereof, but I waffled and did something safer. Somehow none of your songs were on my mix, so I’m excited to hear how yours came out.

Personal Jesus talks about the “second best” thing to talking to Jesus – the business of TV/phone evangelism. Getting “saved” through another human, a human who waits until you’re down and out and vulnerable (“Feeling unknown/And you’re all alone”), and then you’re saved and converted, for a small fee. These guys basically play Jesus for these needy people – people with the need for an answer, because they’re prayers aren’t getting answered. Forgiving sins, converting folks to Christianity, etc. – all without getting off the couch.

This is what Jeff Mangum wrote in the liner notes about KoCF pt.2/3:
‘a song for a old friend and a song for a new friend and now a song for Jesus Christ and since this seems to confuse people I’d like to simply say that I mean what I sing although the theme of endless endless on this album is not based on any religion but more in the belief that all things seem to contain a white light within them that i see as eternal’
I took these interpretation write outs from other sites, but they make the most sense to me. I’m not trying to offend anyone by posting these. The liner notes are real though.

Insane! I was in the process of making a mix with that NMH song, along with “Dear God (sincerely M.O.F.)” by Monsters of Folk. This looks really great, though.

Another fine production! I’m not very religious either, but still love these kinds of songs. Especially from Johnny Cash and the Monsters of Folk guys.
Btw, I noticed a couple things you might want to fix… Yim Yames was left off the artwork and José González & M. Ward are backwards in your blog text. Also, not seeing the previous cover versions. I only point these out because I know your such a perfectionist :)

Excellent mix. Funny that I also used Pedro The Lion’s “Rapture” in a recent mix when some friends and I played a game we called Songs That Sound Like This Photo. My photo was one of Weegee’s classics. The mix is available here if you’re interested.

I love when someone takes a risk, and you took it, just for that this mixcast is all worthy. The tracklist looks pretty solid, I would add ‘Condemnation’ by Depeche Mode, probably my favorite one with a religious theme. BTW, what is it the background of the cover? I like the color of that, looks like marble or some sort of stone, but I like the caramel color, probably not the apropiate color to go with the theme -should be white- but that’s exactly what I love about the art. God bless you Bobby!!!!

How do you discover your music? Do you buy all your music off iTunes or Amazon or retail stores? Or are you a pirater?

How come there’s no Coldplay?

@Rob – Because they’re not very good…?

Hey, I’m a big fan. I’ve been following your blog for a real long time now and I really love the wallpapers you put up. To be honest your blogging work kind of inspired me and my friends to start our own blog. We launched today with a story about manga and facebook integration. It would mean a lot if you dropped by and maybe left us a comment. So far we had a really great turn out and we’re having lots of fun and I think it’s safe to say it’s all thanks to your blog making us want to do stuff like this. I hope you’ll find something interesting to read on our page.
Thanks a lot.

The cover reminds me of a infrographic/religious map in my parents ancient “Times Map of the World”. It has little coloured-patterned crosses for christian countries, David Stars for jewish countries, little cresent moons for muslim countries. Very nice!

based on religion but no sufjan? tsk? although the whole thing is fairly rad. carry on.

what happened with the two practice versions?

I like the transitions here which aren’t musical so much as understood. It works. There’s a contrast between theme and rhythm that make it interesting. Thanks for the continually great mixes, buddy!

Ha! Good stuff, started reading the post and first thought regarding a song was almost anything from BRMC’s Howl album (love that album) and lookit’ that! Gospel Song is right there, nice.
