Kitsune Noir Mixcast / No.021
January 15, 2010 // Kitsune Noir Mixcast

Last week we took a look into the future, at the new music coming out in 2010. This week we’re going back to the 90’s. I’ve put together a collection of my favorite one-hit wonders from the 90’s, the things that songs that never really propelled bands to stardom but found a tender a place in my heart. I tried to pick the more obscure bands and songs, so hopefully this brings back some memories for you.
For the cover art I tried to recreate the Saved By The Bell logo with a Kitsune Noir spin. I hand drew the type and then traced it all out in (my enemy) Illustrator then put it all together in Photoshop. It’s insane just how janky that title is. I know it looks like I did a shitty job but go look at the original and you’ll see just how horribly designed it is.
Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Female of the Species by Space
In The Meantime by Spacehog
I Could Never Be Your Woman by White Town
Desperately Wanting by Better Than Ezra
Breakfast At Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something
Bound for the Floor by Local H
Super Bon Bon by Soul Coughing
Radiation Vibe by Fountains of Wayne
Possum Kingdom by The Toadies
Sucked Out by Superdrag
Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods
Lady, Your Roof Brings Me Down by Scott Weiland
Bobby

`I prefer JPG over JPEG any day.`

The last song reminds me of the great expectations movie. I think it was on the soundtrack. Visually stunning but wonky on it’s adherence to the source material. Francesco Clemente’s work were probably the most memorable part of the film.

I recognized that cover immediately. Good work! Also: The Toadies rule! I may or may not have had a Geocities page dedicated to them back in the day.

I think the cover is great. It gives me a 90’s feeling and that’s why you made it.

This is also my favorite mixcast, maybe second only to the Christmas one. The only weird thing is hearing Soul Coughing described as one hit wonders.

I’m so glad you included Bound for the Floor! I love that song so much. And this mixcast theme is insanely cool!
Comment by James — January 16, 2010 #
recognized the style as a Saved By The Bell homage instantly!
also, thanks for the flashbacks, musically.
Comment by Craig — January 16, 2010 #
There’s nothing janky about the title. It’s immediately recognizable and well done!
White Town and Superdrag!

Whoa man. This is crazy. I had the mix going, and all the sudden my BF started rambling about his early awkward teenage years. Job WELL done, Man. I have to say, I love your mixes, but this is far most emotionally involved I’ve ever felt by listening… not entirely sure it’s all good either, but I appreciate it for what it has accomplished. And honestly, I found 90s music a let down even during the 90s… but ya know… this mix has been actually a lot of fun.

Why is Illustrator your enemy? —is there something I missed?
Comment by Colby — January 16, 2010 #
Great mix.
I totally hear you on Illustrator too. Well, until I sat down with one of those books and learned it. I still find myself starting projects in Photoshop though. Its just so much quicker for a lot of things.

I’ve been thinking about White Town recently, that song is still so catchy!

No joke: yesterday morning I was putting away some dishes and singing the hook “the female of the species is more deadly than the male”
I shortly thereafter wondered if anyone else remembered that song.
Kudos, to both you and coincidence.

Yikes I haven’t heard that space song in 10+ years! The Toadies are one of my all time faves, great mix!

Great choice with Spacehog, In The Meantime. Fantastic

OMG – In the Meantime – *awesome* ^_^
Could’ve had the band Self on there for a little more dash of unpredictability and excitement…
Comment by Jonas — January 19, 2010 #
@Jonas- Yeah, but I never listened to this band Self you speak of, so it doesn’t belong on here, haha…
Comment by Bobby — January 19, 2010 #
