‘Zef Side’ by Die Antwoord
February 8, 2010 // Music Video

So I tried really hard not to post this video, but this song has been stuck in my head for days now and I need to deal with it. This South African group is called Die Antwoord, which is made up of Ninja, Yo-landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek. They make next level beats and are one of the best things I’ve seen in a while. My roommate thinks it’s like an Ali G kind of thing, but I’m not convinced.

What I do know is that they need to make these characters into a movie and call it Gummo 2. You could have Jeremy Scott play Ninja, Chloe Sevigny as Yo-landi Vi$$er and that Hurley guy from Lost as DJ Hi-Tek. Then all you need to do is grab Harmony and some old 35mm cameras and fly to South Africa and boom, instant success.

On a side note, I think it’s weird that there are no aliens in South Africa now that I’ve seen District 9. I kept imagining prawns to be lurking in the backgrounds of some of those shots. Oh god is that racist?

  1. Ha ha… this Die Antwoord mini-phenomenon is great. I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

I mostly still love them because of this video in a taxi. She’s got so much attitude.

  5. Wow, it’s weird seeing a post about an SA band on KN! Sometimes I think the world out there forgets our country exists…

A couple things: ‘Die Antwoord’ is Afrikaans for ‘The Answer’, and it’s not so much an Ali G thing as it is the group making music in the guise of a more white-trash version of themselves? Sort of…

Anyway, it’s great to see some south african content on a great blog like this, so keep it up!

And no, no aliens around here… At least not in Cape Town…

  6. I don’t know why, but I saw this last week through twitter and all of a sudden I’m seeing it everywhere. It’s hilarious! Some serious next-level beats.

  8. I don’t know what would make it an “Ali G thing” but these guys are all art school kids and its definitely a “project.”

I don’t think that makes it fake or any less enjoyable.

  9. Regardless if this is just a big joke or not, this is great. I want to hear more. I only read who it was and that they were from South Africa before I watched it, and I was expecting to see some aliens from District 9 too. So you aren’t alone my racist brother.

  10. It’s unfortunate when someone rips off the name of an already legendary DJ/producer, in this instance Hi-Tek.

  11. I see someone else posted something about “Enter the Ninja,” which is totally way more catchy. It was so strange when their video stared popping up on the interweb (ha) right after I met up with my South African cousins.

  13. i love it. embarrassingly spent half the weekend playing their two videos and pouring over all of the fantastic photos on their website. apparently it’s time to get a life because i can’t keep singing “i am a butterfly” over and over and over to myself. people will start to wonder.

  14. Haha, Die Antwoord. It seems that only in South Africa white trash can go mainstream. I’m not in love with it, but it’s great to see that South African acts are getting noticed. Maybe proper bands will get a showcasing after this. Awesome to see someting from RSA on KN!!

  15. If you meet Waddy Jones, or the ninja in this case, you will see that as fake as this seems its reel to him, he lives this shit

  16. Ha ha, that little comment at the end about District 9 made me laugh. So true though, I almost wish that there were aliens in South Africa, minus the terrible apartheid-esque segregation.
