Square: Mobile Payments Made Easy

I’ve been keeping my eye on Square for a little bit now, and they continue to pique my interest. Square is a simple idea: letting you people pay for things with just an app and an iPhone/Touch. The benefit of this is giving small businesses the ability to take credit card payments. So when you show up at the taco truck at 1AM after a long night of drinking without cash, you’ll still be in luck.

This seems like such a simple idea, though I’m sure it’s taken a lot of planning and research. But something like this is definitely in need, especially if the process is as easy as the video above illustrates. I’d love to see something like this combined with an iPad, it would almost be like the ultimate all-in-one order form. I’m really looking forward to seeing this idea progress into a more mainstream device.

  1. I hope I’m not the only one who immediately thought “something like this is definitely NOT needed in my life.” Despite everyone telling us to move faster and keep up, I still prefer cash to rule everything around me.

  2. @John Short – You’ve clearly missed the entire point. This has nothing to do with moving faster, it’s about allowing small businesses to talk credit card transactions so their customers don’t always need to carry cash. This could be a really valuable tool for a lot of people.

  7. this is awesome, i like the idea of being able to accept plastic from anyone i know and the fact that this will make it easier for smaller businesses to accept plastic as well.

    plus i never carry cash, since my check is direct deposited.

  8. i would never trust anyone with one of these things, especially some random dude with a taco stand. how hard would be to fake one of these things up or write your own app for a jailbroken phone? have you seen the skimmers they make for ATM machines?
