Space Suit of the Week
Posted by Alex Dent • May 14, 2010 • Space Suit of the Week

Don’t feel bad if you mistook him for Giorgio Moroder. This is Hubert Vykukal and his space suit, the AX-3. From the AX series of space suits spanning the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, this particular prototype is from 1977, the same year that Saturday Night Fever popularized disco to a wide audience. And doesn’t this suit look a little disco?  Aren’t those shoes a little too far out for just moonrocks?

Of course, those shoes weren’t meant for the moon; the last moon landing was completed in 1972 by the crew of the Apollo 17 mission. Instead, this suit considers problems of suit pressure and mobility, which doesn’t seem as exciting as when scientist leave low earth orbit and shoot for the moon. But the space suits are no less fantastic, just more grounded.

Alex.
