My Love/Hate Affair with Twitter

I’ve been using Twitter in my sidebar for the last few months, and I have to say that I really like it. I just think it’s fun that I can share with anyone reading the blog what I’m doing. But at the same time it’s completely unreliable and half the time it causes my sidebar not to load completely, making me want to lash out at the ones I love.

I’m pretty good with Google-ing stuff and finding fixes for problems like this, but for the life of me I have no idea how to write my own code to stop Twitter from being the most obnoxious thing on the planet. Can anyone help me write some code so that Twitter loads correctly and doesn’t gum up my blog? One of you out there has to know something about this! If you think you can help, email me at hello@kitsunenoir.com.

  1. My qualms with Twitter focus on content. I think it works as an interesting web “broadcast” tool, but I don’t feel its successful on the mobile phone. My friends always twitter abstract concepts, but don’t use it for notifying of what they are doing.

  2. Let’s just say Twitter isn’t a role model for scalable stable apps. If you want to avoid problems with it, I recommend using one of the tools for WordPress (http://www.quickonlinetips.com/archives/2007/04/10-best-twitter-tools-for-wordpress-blogs/) so that you pull in the twit into WP as a special blog post. That way your blog isn’t hung up or broken when Twitter is down or lagging.

  3. I’m not sure of the method you’ve been using to display your twitter feed but I’ve been using the simpletwitter wordpress plug-in and it does a good job. It caches your latest tweet so when twitter goes down, your blog doesn’t become affected.
