Song for Jo by Scarlett Johansson

Time Enough For Rocking When We’re Old by The Magnetic Fields

Yet again all of the music I listened to last week wasn’t recorded, I think it’s because I listen to my iPod at work, but this is a fair guesstimation of what last week was like. Coming out on top was The Magnetic Fields, who’s 69 Love Songs I’ve been listening to quite a lot lately, as well as the new album and I. Their sound is so eclectic that it kind of fits any mood you might be in. After that was The Notwist again with their new album The Devil, You + Me. Almost every song there is really good, but not all of them, though it’s definitely a 9 out of 10 kinda album. Then was French Kicks, Belle & Sebastian and Devendra.

What came as a total surprise to me was how good the new Scarlett Johansson album was! For those who don’t know the album is made up of Tom Waits covers and one song of her own. I’m not a fan of Tom Waits, in fact I hate his voice, he sounds like he’s gargling gravel. But I do really like what she’s done with the songs, her voice sounding somewhere between Trish Keenan of Broadcast and Claudia Gonson of The Magnetic Fields. The album also features contributions from DAVID BOWIE and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s. If I haven’t named enough reasons to even make you curious about this record I don’t know what else to say.

Filling out the rest of the list was Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear (when is their new album coming out?!), Jens Lekman, and Ladytron. I also found another new couple records that will probably be making new appearances on the list, so keep an eye out next week.

  4. When I saw that Scarlett Johansson is to release an album I was a little skeptical because sometimes her voice can be a little annoying (always so scratchy), but I am impressed. She has a bit of a “retro” feel (especially in “Summertime”) to her voice.
