Download I Was Dreaming of Just You | A Kitsune Noir Mixtape

For months now I’ve been trying to come up with a really good summer mix, something that would hopefully be relevant as the summer goes on and would pick up on the vibe of summer that I so love. This mix started out as two different beings, one was a list on my iPod of songs that I thought could work, the other a list in my iTunes. Eventually they became merged into one in Garageband and then went through another 4 versions from there, until it finally felt right. I’ve been driving around listening to this mix, and I think that’s where it’s best suited for. In my mind this mix is meant to be thought of as a night out with your friends and loved ones. You start the night out strong and with no cares, but eventually the night winds down, it’s late, it’s chilly, and you’re left with memories of that night.

The songs on this mix come from all over the place really, though several of them are pretty damn new that you may have never heard them. There’s new Beck, Dr. Dog, some pretty recent Deerhunter, coupled with some old Modest Mouse, a Radiohead B-Side and much more. This mix has 14 songs and runs 46 and a half minutes long, making it one of the longest mixes I’ve ever made. For all of you in the U.S. I hope this provides for some good Independence Day tunes, and for everyone else, here’s to an awesome summer.

Bobby

  1. wow. “The songs on this mix come from all over the place really, though several of them are pretty damn new that you may have never heard them.” are you kidding? this is about as indie cliche as it comes.

    also, Deerhunter not Deerhunte

  2. I’m sorry you found this so offensive you needed to leave a comment.

  3. i’m not offended monsieur bobby, i just found some hilarity that you felt the need to preface the depths of your mix when it all seems fairly (indie)mainstream.

  4. Hey Caterpillar! Slob on my balls!

    Comment by Jon — July 4, 2008 #

  5. Hahah. Now that’s the holiday spirit! I suggest renaming the mix, “Slob on my balls!”.

  7. Jon is British, thus, has no spirit today.
Now let’s all be nice and listen to the silly mix I made.

  8. Thanks for sharing this with us. Regardless of whether we know the songs already or not, it’s the mood that your mixtapes invoke that make them great.
    Have a happy 4th. :]

  9. perfect selection, all the ones you picked could seem “indie mainstream” to someone but it’s still great tunes.
i really appreciate the way you mix them

  10. I’m hot. I’m tired. I’ve been cleaning for a July 4th extravaganza all day long. A better mood is in order. I need a cold shower and I need this mix. Thank the gods for this!

  14. part of me was seriously cursing the world a couple of days ago for producing ob-la-di ob-la-da, i mean it’s cruel for a song to be that catchy.

anyway, i’m very excited about your new mix and would also like to wish you a terrific fourth, though it has come and gone. now i’m sounding about as corny as ob-la-di ob-la-da

god bless america and the beatles too

  17. I like that typeface, especially the numbers on the back. you come up with it on your own?

    Comment by Dan! — July 5, 2008 #

  18. the font is ‘Bifurk’

    Comment by giovanni — July 5, 2008 #

  19. It’s called Bifurk: http://www.dafont.com/bifurk.font

It doesn’t really work for many projects but I thought it looked nice and abstract on this one.

Note: I wrote this without knowing that Giovanni above me had commented : )

  20. BEck a scientologist? Damn it….

    Comment by Ariel — July 5, 2008 #

  21. The KN+ logo on the back somehow reminds me of Rammstein, but that just must be a really-really distant association of my disoriented mind. Great stuff btw:)

  31. Yo Bobby,

What can you do in Garageband with your mix that you can’t do in iTunes?

I’m just curious because I’ve never considered using it when I’m making a mixtape for a friend. Can you put all the tracks onto 1 mp3 or something or does it let you do the artwork better?

    Enlighten me!

  39. Man, you guys are crazy for this mixtape! I think this one has been downloaded faster than ANY of the others, so thank you all!

First off, the mix is always going to be one long MP3. It’s a mixtape, you’re not supposed to skip around, you just put it on and enjoy!

Second, and related to above, I make the mix in Garageband because I can easily mix the tracks together smoothly and then export it out into one MP3. I can also just drag the songs straight from my iTunes into Garageband, so it makes changing things easy as well.

Third, Beck was raised a Scientologist, and he doesn’t go around being all preachy, he didn’t even admit to being one until 2005, so I personally cut him a lot of slack: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beck#Personal_life

I’ll post another mix next month, so be ready!

  40. I’m going to give Garageband a try then for the next mixtape I make my girlfriend. Thanks for the tip.

  41. Thanks for this mixtape. Just came upon this blog recently, and absolutely love it. Especially the mixtapes.

Unfortunately the passionate first commenter just had to be as elitist as possible. I’m sure he listens to bands that don’t even exist yet.

  42. Great mix! I’ve been listening to it for a few weeks now. I’m not as indie-hipster-cool as caterpillar, so many of these are new to me. I’m always interested to see your designs as well. Mixtapes are a great way to see a designer’s personal taste.

    Keep ‘em coming!

  43. I downloaded this mix and took it w/ me on my European vacation which included a 7 day cruise of the Baltic Sea.

I have this memory of playing this mix, as the cruise ship eased into port one crisp, sunny, beautiful morning - staring into the water and hearing these great tunes on my Ipod.

    Much thanks!!

  46. Frankly, I hate caterpillars. I think they’re ugly little bugs who only have transforming into an entirely different being to look forward to.

  47. Worrywort has always been a favorite of mine. “There’s no use dwelling on what might have been, just think of all the fun you could be having.”

Also Deep Water is one of my favorites off Third. I especially love the way it contrasts with Machine Gun.
