With Halloween only a week away, and the fact that I’ve purposely been starving you of mixes, I thought it would be nice to give you all a brand new mixtape. This one is kind of a special edition, because for the first time, I didn’t make this mix. It was made by my good friend Adam Puncochar, who actually messaged me through the blog a little while ago, and funny enough, we’re pretty much the very same person. Except, that he’s WAY better at actually doing DJ style mixes. He’s also a really incredible designer as well, I highly suggest checking out the Max Fischer (yes, like the movie) t-shirts he did.

Anyhow, I asked him if he would create a sweet Halloween mix for me, knowing full and well I couldn’t do it justice. The mix above goes all over hte place, from current hits, to old favorites, and even some classic gems. It’ll get people laughing and it’ll get people dancing, two of the best things in the world, especially for Halloween.

I’ve also got 3 more mixes coming out, two from myself, and one then one other from an up and coming Dj from Australia named Teen Creep, aka James Kane. So keep your eyes out next week for goodies, and I hope you all enjoy the mix!

The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring Andy Miller

Morning everyone! Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday… new wallpaper! This week’s artist is Andy Miller, and he’s one of those fresh up-and-coming types who’s really hitting his stride. Checking out his site he’s done projects with The Yellow Bird Project, Paul Paper, and Infectious Art, along with a ton of other great person pieces like his Poison Apple wallpaper which needs to be made into real wallpaper. A funny sidenote, when I asked Andy to do the project, he wrote me back the very next day saying, “After you asked me last night about the wallpaper, I couldn’t quit working on it!”, and thus the wallpaper above was born.

I think this wallpaper is really great, there’s just so much going on, but it’s not overwhelming to me. The colors are really fun, and I love all the textures he threw in there as well. I also love the little owl friend poking his out from the big YES, he’s cute. If you’ve got an iPhone, be sure to check out the iPhone version, it looks really dang good. Elliott Smith Would Have Been 39

Earlier tonight I went and had dinner at this place down the street from me called Malo, it’s a yummy Mexican place with fancy margaritas. Anyhow, it also happens to be next door to where the cover of Elliott Smiths’ Figure 8 was taken, which is somewhat of a landmark around here. But I noticed that there were candles all along the wall, and people sitting out in front playing guitar. It struck me that today was the anniversary of Elliott Smith’s passing, a rather sad day for a lot of people.

It’s been 5 years already, and he would have been 39. It still saddens me that such an amazing person was so sad that they could take their own life. I’ve put a few of my favorite songs below, as sort of remembrance to such an amazing musician who’s touched so many lives. I hope you enjoy them.

Animals by Minilogue

I can’t remember where I came across this video (a bad habit I’m picking up, I apologize) but it’s filled with colorful critters in a real life environment, not to mention that it has quite a catchy little beat. I love seeing animated characters in real environments, and this one is pretty surreal and really enjoyable. The music is by a band called Minilogue, who I have yet to further explore, and the animation was a joint effort done by Ljubilden and Varelsen. Take a few minutes and watch this video, it should make you smile.

Samuel François

Something really struck me about Sameul François’ outdoor pieces, but it’s hard to put my finger on it. The two above are my favorites, and they’re rather simple. He took (what appears to be) a run down building out in the middle of nowhere, and decided to brighten it up by painting it bright colors and adding a bunch of geometric shapes. These bright colors and shapes are totally at odds with their surrondings, which I think makes it even better.

What I think I like best is that it makes me inspired to do this somewhere in my my own neighborhood or somewhere in my home town. I think coming across something like this in the middle of a forest would be really beautiful, what do you all think?

Michael Beirut’s Politically Neutral Lapel Pin

Politics. While they may frustrate my to no end, they intrigue me even more. So when I came across this new lapel pin by Michael Beirut, a collaboration between he and Men’s Vogue, I was quite excited, as it was designed to be politically neutral, something we can all appreciate. With the pins design, Beirut “tried to defamiliarize a very familiar configuration of letters”, and it’s unique shape is inspired by the country’s history as a melting pot.

I think this is a really beautiful piece of work and is extremely timeless feeling, something I’ve found is really important to me lately. There are only 5,000 made and they go for $10 a piece, so grab one while you can, I already did.

Thobias Fäldt

Continuing on a photographic jaunt, I bring you the work of Thobias Fäldt, a Swedish photographer who’s been making the rounds around the interwebs lately. Thobias has this really great style of using the bright flash ever, which illuminates and washes out everything he shoots, making everything kind of hyper-realistic. He’s got a ton of work on his site, so pop over and check it out.

Nicolai Howalt

Danish photographer Nicolai Howalt has a really great photo series on his site called Boxer which he took in 2003. It features young boys before and after they’re boxing matches, and as you can see above, some of the afters are quite drastic. Altogether there are 44 photos, and the before and afters are pretty all over the place, some of the kids looking red and puffy, while others just look like they’re was ruffled a little.

It’s kind of like those games where you’re trying to spot the differences, except you’re looking for bruises and swollen eyes.

An Awesome Collection of Bottlecaps

As some of you may have noticed, the amount of posts on the site has greatly decreased. This is because my real life, well, is more important, and I’ve got people and places to see. So I guess this is a little note saying that the way I post is gonna be a little different. I’m gonna continue to try and write really complete posts, but sometimes they might just be thoughts or something cool I come across that I really do want to share, but don’t really have the time to write about.

For example, I came across this really awesome set of bottlecaps from fragmented’s Flickr. I found this through some blog a couple weeks ago and fell in love with them. So far he has 241 bottlecaps total, and they’re all pretty cool, new and old, in all sorts of colors and flavors. Hopefully this can inspire a couple of you out there?

Confederacy

On Saturday, I went to one of those amazing spaces I talked about in the previous post, something I had read about on Refinery 29 last week. It’s a hot new shop on Sunset Blvd. about 6 blocks down the street from my house called Confederacy, and I’m totally in love with it.

The store features a ton of great brands like Shipley Halmous (my absolute favorite right now), Rag & Bone (who also made the crew at Confederacy custom “uniforms”), Band of Outsiders, Nom de Guerre, and that’s just the guys stuff. On the ladies side there’s Proenza Schouler, Zac Posen, Opeing Ceremony, and Burberry. Inside the whole thing is very urban, with lots of exposed bricks, old BINGO signs, telephone booths to try clothes on in, old movie theater seats, aged couches… it’s a slice of heaven.

The best part though was definitely the service, a young due named Nick helped me and my friend out and he was really friendly and helpful. The store is still growing, they plan on adding a café and there will be an outdoor seating area, so if you ever visit, keep an eye out for me sipping an Americano and brushing up on the newest issue of Monocle.
