Scent Bar
Posted: January 12, 2009 // Los Angeles

My final destination yesterday was a little place called Scent Bar, which is actually the physical extension of the website Lucky Scent. My friend Max was looking for this line of scents called Six Scents, so I was looking up places to find it and came across Scent Bar.

The space is rather small, but the walls are lined with tons of fragrances, mens and womens, in any scent you can imagine. We obviously concentrated on the men’s portion, where we ended up smelling scents like pickle juice and crushed grass. My favorite scent was one that smelled like clear Haribo gummi bears taste, which actually smelled even better when it was on my skin, oddly enough. It was a very synaesthetic experience.

The young lady who worked there was really sweet as well, letting me take photos and explaining a ton of the scents to us. She even let me spray a KN on Max’s shirt with that Boudicca Wode Perfume, which sprays on bright blue and gradually disappears. If you haven’t yet seen the video for this, it’s definitely one to check out. It actually smelled pretty good too.

Max ended up getting a Tamboti Wood scent by Susanne Lang, which is a really nice and light scent, made up of tamboti wood, fresh cedar, sandalwood, and vetiver. Overall it was a really fun experience, and we ended up learning a lot about scents, something I didn’t know I was really interested in. If you’re in the LA area and want a new smell, definitely hit up Scent Bar.

  2. I visit Scent Bar each and every time I go to LA to see my parents. There are very few free standing stores in the United States like SB and for a colognoisseur like me it’s an institution.

I’m also wondering what scent you smelled that smelled like gummi bears?? I love that smell! :)

  3. I’m pretty sure it was Soda by Commes des Garcons:

  4. I don’t know if its still in their archives, but Studio 360 did a show on Scent, and there were some amazing shops and books mentioned. Its something we hardly ever think about, we the visio-aural obsessed.

  5. I am familiar with Soda – one of the best in the Synthetic Series from CdG (Skai is also pretty wonderful).

To me it reminds me of the smell of tonic water. I’m going to have to smell it again, to see if I detect the gummi bear accord next time. :)

  6. Scentbar’s “young lady” chiming in here…the gummi bear scent was Skai from CDG’s synthetic series.
