The Quiet Life Summer 2K8

My buddy Andy, the mastermind behind The Quiet Life, has this morning released his new summer collection and it’s looking damn good! This season there are 10 new t-shirts, a polo, a hoodie, and a military jacket, most of it coming in two colorways as well.

What you see above are my favorites. I love the lined paper shirt, that’s a whole new take on the whole all-over print thing. The shapes jump roping is just so pleasant looking, and all of those cameras hanging around the neck of that shirt is way too rad. And yes, sad songs do make me happy, so I’m definitely into that one as well. Also be sure to check out the cut and sew section, my buddy Eric has the military jacket and it looks pretty damn good over a nice collared shirt.

Johnny Cupcakes, Los Angeles

Though I’m not a fan of t-shirts that cost more than $30, Johnny Cupcakes has always been one of those shops that comes out with a pretty consistent blend of shirts with some solid illustrations. Well it turns out that Mr. Cupcakes has decided to take his proven recipe and bring it to a new home here in Los Angeles, opening a brand new store on the oh-so-fancy Melrose Ave.

In order to get people drooling over this upcoming store he’s provided a video sneak preview of the ideas he has for the shop. The store itself is going to be right across the street from Kid Robot and Paul Frank, so he’ll be in good company. Inside the store you’ll purchase shirts at a counter that looks like a stove top, the shirts will be stored in a giant refrigerator, a wall of oven doors that hold even more t-shirts, including some doors that open randomly and shoot out steam! He’s been working with a company that creates things for Disneyland, so it seems like this is going to be an attraction all on it’s own!

The store is set to open this summer, and I’ll definitely be there when it does open with some photos and maybe some video, hopefully it turns out as good as it sounds!

Sixpack France

Gah.

If you read KN enough you know I have a serious t-shirt addiction. As of lately I’ve tried to steer away from the look, opting for more button-ups, trying to keep it classy. But then I was told about Sixpack France, and now I’m a little worried that I’m going to regress back!

Sixpack France has actually been around for 10 years now, starting out as a small store in France and now ending up with an amazing online store filled with some o the best artists out there. It’s kind of a joke how awesome their line-up is. They’ve got Brendan Monroe, Cody Hudson, Damien Correll, Dan Funderburgh, Grotesk, Noah Butkus (as you can see above), So-Me,S tefan Marx, Steven Harrington, and like 30 others… it’s totally nuts.

My only beef comes in at the price. The t-shirts run from 32-35 €, which is around $50 per t-shirt, these are pretty damn expensive. I can see paying up to like $30, but c’mon, it’s just a t-shirt! Anyhow, click the link above and check out their drool-worthy collection of tees.

Yellow Bird Project

What’s better than buying a new awesome t-shirt? How about buying a new awesome t-shirt that one of your favorite bands designed? What if it got even better? How about buying a new awesome t-shirt that one of your favorite bands designed that also helps people in need? Well, Yellow Bird Project has done just that.

Based out of Montreal, Yellow Bird Project teams up with some of the raddest bands out there who come up with a cool looking t-shirt graphic, sells the t-shirts online and then donates the money to a charity of the bands choosing. I think this is such a great idea on so many levels. So far the participants include bands like Rilo Kiley, Devendra Banhart, Stars, Wolf Parade and The National, who’s t-shirt you see above, which is also my personal favorite of the batch.

For more information and to check out the rest of the designs, go visit Yellow Bird Project to help people and look cool at the same time.

Thanks to Max for the tip on this!

Detergent T-shirt by us

One of my favorite things about this blog is finding young and talented designers who are starting to come up in the world. This description fits well with the London trio over at us (yes, all lowercase), who are creating a lot of really clever work. I had seen their identity work for the Kingston University degree show, and thought it was extremely fun and well done.

What caught my eye on my most recent visit to their site was the Detergent T-shirts they created as “mementos for festivals throughout the summer”. The point of the shirt is to be worn while you’re out getting muddy and gross at Reading or one of the other festivals, then you throw all your dirty clothes into the washer and the detergent releases from the t-shirt fibers and cleans all of your clothes. The second cool part is that the shirt also has a unique pattern and limited numbering on it, but you can only see the design after you’ve washed the shirt. They won a D&AD Global Student Award for this clever little idea, which I think is pretty fitting.

Check out the rest of their site for more interesting projects like this.

The Amazing Shape by Chris Gray

Chris Gray is a British illustrator who put himself up to the task of creating a (decent) illustration everyday for 30 days and calling it The Amazing Shape. Well today was his last day, and they all look so amazing. I love how he displays them on t-shirts as big bold prints. I’m pretty sure that I would buy each and everyone that he came up with. They remind me somewhat of Grotesk, but only because of his simple color choices and how purely graphic they all are.

He’s thinking next he’ll do a series of skateboard decks, which would also be very cool. Definitely worth 10 minutes of your time.

Good Cause Project T-shirt by The Quiet Life
February 17, 2008 | Categories:
• T-shirts / Art / Clothing / Design

My good friends at The Quiet Life have a new t-shirt for sale as a part of their Good Cause Project. The Good Cause Project is an ongoing series to raise money and awareness for The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, something that’s personally important to them. For the first installment of the project, they held a t-shirt design contest and let people submit ideas. The winner was another Kitsune Noir friend Neil Doshi, who came up with the rad design you see above.

A really cool part of this project is that everything was donated to The Quiet Life, so they’re able to then give 100% of the proceeds directly to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. They’ll be posting the final amount in the beginning of the next season.
The shirts come in Charcoal and Light Blue, and go for $25 or $30, depending on how fancy a t-shirt you want.

Please help out a really good cause and go buy a great looking t-shirt.

Nike Varsity Pop Up Store

Jeff and I went shopping with our friend Garrett this weekend and he decided that he needed to get a new pair of shoes. So we stopped by the Undefeated on La Brea, seeing as how they carry a pretty good variety of shoes. But as we drove by, we noticed a bunch of skanky looking girls hanging out in front of a brightly colored shop bouncing basketballs and talking on their cellphones. Since this was only a few doors down from Undefeated, we decided to check it out.

It turns out the location is called One Forty Four Lab, and the space is now being occupied by a pop up store collaboration between Undefeated and Nike. Every Wednesday and Saturday the store will be releasing exclusive t-shirts in exclusive colors, as most of these things go. When we went in they had shoes for sale, a DJ playing music, and even food. Upstairs there was a big manga on the wall about some Goku looking guy playing basketball.

My favorite parts were the floor, which looked like an old basketball court, and the shoes were pretty rad as well. They looked like they were from a vintage basketball team. If you have a chance, be sure to check out the store, which should be up until the end of the month.

Jean Jullien

Funny story. I came across a link to the portfolio of Jean Jullien a few days ago which took me to a video about a boy with a paper arm who’s friends with a Chewbacca. I’m not really into weird art, so I closed it pretty fast after I opened it. Cut to today when I’m browsing typeish and come across some cute, cut out graphics. I start to explore the site and realize it’s the same, weird, boy-with-a-paper-arm site, but I decide to look around anyway.

It turns out he’s quite a talented guy, and an immensely talented illustrator. His style totally reminds me of Quentin Blake’s, who most people would know as the guy who illustrated most of Roald Dahl’s books. The crazy part is that these images are from an ongoing visual diary he keeps in a moleskine.

Be sure to visit his site and check out all of his odd projects. When you look at all the stuff he’s doing, you realize just how creative this guy is.

Stefan Marx

Stefan Marx is a German illustrator who has a really great online portfolio. His work consists mostly of black and white line drawings, which are pretty detailed and cute, you could say. His mascot is a a smiling house, which he’s created giant sculptures of. He also makes some pretty rad t-shirts as well, which you can find over at The Lousy Livincompany.

Also, I stole this from somebody, but I can’t remember who it was, so my apologies to them for my bad memory.
