Well, it’s been a couple weeks since the HELLAWEEN mixtape mixed by Punchy, which you guys downloaded over 3,000 times, so I thought I’d treat you all to a fresh one. This time around is a mix by a young up-and-coming DJ from Australia by the name of James Kane, aka Teen Creep. James has been doing a lot of remixes lately, and DJ’s locally around Melbourne, sneaking into clubs and getting kids dancing.

His mix is an eclectic collection of tunes from all over the place, and make for an awesome late night dance party. There are also a couple James’ own remixes on there, so be sure to check those out in particular. And as usual, the artwork was done by myself, based off of some photos that James had sent me. Enjoy!

With Halloween only a week away, and the fact that I’ve purposely been starving you of mixes, I thought it would be nice to give you all a brand new mixtape. This one is kind of a special edition, because for the first time, I didn’t make this mix. It was made by my good friend Adam Puncochar, who actually messaged me through the blog a little while ago, and funny enough, we’re pretty much the very same person. Except, that he’s WAY better at actually doing DJ style mixes. He’s also a really incredible designer as well, I highly suggest checking out the Max Fischer (yes, like the movie) t-shirts he did.

Anyhow, I asked him if he would create a sweet Halloween mix for me, knowing full and well I couldn’t do it justice. The mix above goes all over hte place, from current hits, to old favorites, and even some classic gems. It’ll get people laughing and it’ll get people dancing, two of the best things in the world, especially for Halloween.

I’ve also got 3 more mixes coming out, two from myself, and one then one other from an up and coming Dj from Australia named Teen Creep, aka James Kane. So keep your eyes out next week for goodies, and I hope you all enjoy the mix!

Since today is my birthday, I figure that I should give all of you readers a present, which is kind of backwards, but whatever. One of the best things I think I can give you all is a mix, so here you go! It’s called All That’s Left Are Words, One Breath, and is actually mix I’ve had kicking around since I first moved down to LA almost 3 years ago. It was inspired by an idea I had for a short film, something about a young guy who ends up feeling detached from people his age, so he starts hanging out with old people. Well, that was the idea at least. It’s a pretty somber mix, but I think it’s quite beautiful, and I hope you all like.

Also I just wanted to say thank you for all my birthday wishes, you all are some amazingly devoted readers and it really means a lot to me that you guys are so rad, so thanks!

Today I have kind of a special treat, something I hope everyone enjoys. A few weeks ago I noticed that illustrator/designer/man about town Damien Correll had uploaded a new Muxtape, a site for some reason I’m not a huge fan of, but I thought I’d give it a listen anyhow. I sat and listened to the whole thing, I think it was a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, and it was an absolute perfect fit for my day. So I decided to ask Damien if he’d share his mix here on Kitsune Noir, and he graciously said yes, even coming up with some front and back covers as well.

The full title of the mix is actually Here Comes The Sun (It Will Probably Destroy You), but I didn’t have room in the title up there for all of that! The songs on the mix are pretty eclectic, but if I had to give it a theme I’d say the mix was really guitar driven, with a lot of 70’s and 80’s classics. I thought I’d also mention that the mix is mixed together just like all the other Kitsune Noir mixtapes because I put it together for Damien. The mix is also about an hour long, so you’ll be able to get through a small chunk of the day with some awesome new tunes. Definitely download it and give it a try!

For months now I’ve been trying to come up with a really good summer mix, something that would hopefully be relevant as the summer goes on and would pick up on the vibe of summer that I so love. This mix started out as two different beings, one was a list on my iPod of songs that I thought could work, the other a list in my iTunes. Eventually they became merged into one in Garageband and then went through another 4 versions from there, until it finally felt right. I’ve been driving around listening to this mix, and I think that’s where it’s best suited for. In my mind this mix is meant to be thought of as a night out with your friends and loved ones. You start the night out strong and with no cares, but eventually the night winds down, it’s late, it’s chilly, and you’re left with memories of that night.

The songs on this mix come from all over the place really, though several of them are pretty damn new that you may have never heard them. There’s new Beck, Dr. Dog, some pretty recent Deerhunter, coupled with some old Modest Mouse, a Radiohead B-Side and much more. This mix has 14 songs and runs 46 and a half minutes long, making it one of the longest mixes I’ve ever made. For all of you in the U.S. I hope this provides for some good Independence Day tunes, and for everyone else, here’s to an awesome summer.

Since summer is here I’ve been looking for more and more new summer music to listen to, so I decided to get a Best of Paul Simon album. This was the catalyst for this new mix, which is more of a mini-mix because it’s not even 30 minutes long. Basically I heard Paul Simon’s Kodachrome and thought, I should make a fun photo/camera kind of mix. Well I didn’t want to stuff this mix with songs because they had something vaguely to do with cameras or photography, so what you get is a very to the point mix with no frills, just a good time.

The front and back covers were obviously inspired by old Kodachrome film, but it’s a very bastardized version. I basically went on a big image hunt to find packaging and type references to make it look convincing without being a direct ripoff. Of note, the price tag was taken directly from a box of Kodachrome. I hope you all enjoy it, and it’ll hold you over till I make a much more epic mix.

I was going to wait until the morning to post this, but most of Europe is awake by now so I guess I’m writing this for all of you! I had someone write on my Last.fm page last week wondering when I was going to release another mixtape, so I dug up an old mix I had, re-mixed it, created some new artwork, and VOILA!, brand new mixtape for your Monday morning.

This mix was made about a year or so ago but I think that it still holds up pretty well. It was created out of an effort to use songs by bands that weren’t very popular or songs by popular bands that may have been overlooked or unheard by most people. The best example is Ancient Curse by Peter Bjorn & John, a song that’s extremely haunting and downbeat, the absolute opposite of Young Folks. The mix actually had an extra song tacked onto the end of it, but I felt like A Silver Mt. Zion was a more fitting way to end this mix and to cut back on time, I don’t like mixes that drag on too long.

So I hope you all enjoy the mix! The cover was taken from a couple of photos I took with my Lomo back in the day. The front is a photo of Wilco performing at the Greek Theater which accidently got double exposed and ended up looking even more cool. But I have no idea what the back is, just a random shot out the window probably, haha…

In about 30 minutes I’ll be driving up north with my best friend to visit family and friends for the weekend, so I wanted to leave everyone something to keep them occupied over the weekend. So I stayed up way too late last night working on another mix that I’ve had floating around forever. It’s called Deep Blue Sea, and that’s pretty much what it’s got on it, songs about the sea. The inspiration for this album was hearing ‘Anchor Song’ by Björk, and then listening to the new Shins album which is very ocean-y itself. What sparked the idea to finish the mixtape was hearing ‘Sailing By Night’ by Department of Eagles, that was like the last piece of the puzzle.
I hope you all like the mix, it’s pretty simple and should be good for the rainy day weather that California is supposed to have this weekend, the same weather I’m sure a lot of you out there are having as well.

I’ve been working on this mix for about… 2 or 3 months now, and I’m so happy to finally finish it. It started out one way, and has ended up in a whole new form. I really just decided to go with what I know, and made a mix that’s overall folk influenced, but not necessarily consumed by it. Some of the songs are over 30 years old, some came out more recently, one song came out a month ago. Overall it’s a really laid back mix, good for driving home after a shitty day of work, when you need to unwind, or when you’re ready to go to bed. Personally, those are all my favorite times, haha…

This is also the first time anyone other than myself has heard it in it’s new form. I literally finished it at 1 AM this morning and decided that I should make a front and back cover and post it so I can feel like I’m finally finished. I’m really happy how it turned out, I feel like it came together really strongly. I hope you enjoy as much as I do.

P.S. I took the photo on the front cover exactly as you see it, there was no digital manipulation.

Kitsune Noir Mixtape

So as of lately, I’ve been having a secret love affair. Well, some people know about it. I just get embarrassed talking about it. That’s because I’ve become totally infatuated with a children’s television show.

It’s called Yo Gabba Gabba!, and it’s a show about 5 creatures living in a Thomas Campbell-esque forest, which are governed by a giant, lanky black man who wears thick glasses, and orange-red spandex called DJ Lance Rock. The whole thing sounds completely ridiculous, and it is, it’s a kid show, but it’s the people who created the show and what they’re doing with it is what excites me.

The show was created by Scott Schultz and Christian Jacobs, who set out to make something that kids and parents alike could enjoy. So for example, you have a guy on the show who teaches the kids how to make funny sounds, but teaching them about rhythm at the same time. But you, as the ultra-hip parent of that child, know that the guy making the funny sounds is actually beat-boxing, and that THAT guy is Biz Markie, probably one of the best beat-boxers in the world.
But it doesn’t end there. So far they’ve gotten Mark Mothersbaugh, The Shins, The Aquabats, Elijah Wood, and Tony Hawk all on the show to do something cool… I mean teach your kids something.

So I’ve become so inspired by the show, I’ve decided to create a mix of cool indie artists with some songs that could be considered educational, or are at least kid related.
And the image above is the cover for the mix, which was drawn by my best friend since the third grade, Garrett Vander Leun, and colored by myself. The guy on the cover is supposed to be Devendra Banhart in a crazy wizard outfit, because we all know that’s what he really is, haha!
