Arkitip has a new preview of issue No. 0045, and it looks like it’s gonna’ be pretty amazing. So far all there is to see are these shots of the red envelope the issue comes in, but that’s not the exciting part. The exciting part is the names that are stamped onto the envelope; Cody Hudson, Evan Hecox, and Todd St. John. Each stamp is was written in Evan Hecox’s handwriting which is kind of cool as well. Those three names on the envelope are totally enough for me to buy the issue, which comes out tomorrow.

Ladd Magazine Holder by METAPHYS
February 27, 2008 | Categories:

I can easily admit that I have a problem with magazines. I think I always have, though now-a-days my 25 year old paycheck is larger than my 19 year old paycheck, so I tend to buy a lot more. This habit leads to having stacks of magazines all over my apartment. But if I had something like this Ladd Magazine Holder by METAPHYS, this probably wouldn’t be so bad, and my apartment would be a lot cooler looking.

I’m not entirely familiar with METAPHYS, though I know they all into the same minimal, Japanese design category as Muji and plusminuszero. Basically it’s awesome stuff you can only get in Japan (Muji being the recent exception). Ladd up there goes for ¥49,800, or about $50 dollars $500 DOLLARS. I totally put my decimal point in the wrong place, and now I regret posting these. They are rather cool, but nowhere near $500 cool. I’ll just got to some craft fair and buy a ladder made out of branches or something…

Unidentified Faesthetic Object!

UPSO wrote me over the weekend asking if I could get the help of you readers with an upcoming issue of his rad magazine, Faesthetic. He’s on a search for artists and designers that have had experiences of any kind with UFOs. What that exactly means I’m not 100% sure, but if you have anything related to the topic of UFOs send them over to info@faesthetic.com, and you just might see your work in print in the coming months!

Remember, send them to info@faesthetic.com, not to me at here at Kitsune Noir. I’ll just think you’re some weirdo trying to spam me.

GOOD Food by Rad Mountain
February 11, 2008 | Categories:

I bought the new issue of GOOD Magazine, one of my favorite new magazines for sure, and noticed right in the front was the cutest food illustration ever! The images are by Rad Mountain, a NY art collective comprised of Damien Correll, Justin Fines, Wyeth Hansen, Garrett Morin, and Ryan Waller. Phew! I seriously want to frame these in my apartment!

Also be sure to check out the rest of the magazine as well. There’s a great story about pampered food, and how it’s better for everyone, and a bunch of other great food related topics, which is what the issue is about.

Vanity Fair’s Hitchcock Inspired Hollywood Portfolio

In the newest issue of Vanity Fair they have an amazing Hitchcock inspired photo spread featuring some of Hollywood’s biggest stars and taken by some of the biggest photographer’s. There are 11 photos total and over 20 stars including Jodi Foster and Seth Rogen as you can see above. The photos were taken by Julian Broad, Norman jJan Roy, Mark Seliger, and Art Strieber.

For the photos, they’ve taken the actors and placed them into classic Hitchcock movies like Rear Window, Psycho, and The Birds. I think the photos look absolutely amazing, they totally look like pivotal scenes from each of the movies. I’ve put the rest of the photos under the cut, but what do you all think of them?

For the latest issue of Arkitip they’ve handed over control to the designer’s over at Wood Wood to guide the magazine as well tie it into the Highmath show that’s happening in Berlin presently. The issue itself is doubling as the exhibition catalog, and comes along with a black View Master and 3 image reels which show the work from the show. The show features a ton of great artists including:

Andrew Schoultz, Chris Lindig, Ed Templeton, Evan Hecox, Cody Hudson, CR Stecyk III, Eric Elms, Gary Benzel, Geoff McFetridge, Jo Jackson, José Parlá, Josh Petherick, Kaws, Killpixie, Michael Leon, Kevin Lyons, Michael Perry, Parra, Phil Frost, Perks, Peter Beste, Peter Sutherland, Richard Colman, Ryan Waller, Shepard Fairey, Todd St. John & Steven Harrington

I think this is kind of funny because I posted about wanting to make a black Kitsune Noir View Master last May, so obviously I was onto something! The issue including View Master and reels is $45.00 and you can order it here.

Dwell Magazine Redesign Party
February 8, 2008 | Categories:
Architecture / Design / Los Angeles / Magazine

Last night I attended a Dwell magazine party at FORDBRADY, a rather hip furniture store located almost downtown, but not quite. The party was in honor of the new redesign of Dwell, as well as their upcoming conference, Dwell on Design. The party probably would have been cool if I had known anyone, but sadly I’m not over 40, nor an architect or a furniture designer. So that sort of limited to who I was going to talk to. The only person I ended up knowing was Andy Dick, and that boss guy from Ally McBeal who liked touching neck waddle.

But they did serve Stella Artois and give out gift bags, so that was good. They also gave out the new issue of the magazine, and I have to say that I’m liking the new redesign now. I wasn’t 100% convinced with the last issue/first redesign, but this one has me sold. The main feature in this issue is about small spaces (under 1000 sq. ft.), which is interesting to me because my apartment is no larger than 300 sq. ft. One thing that does bother me a little is that some of the stories start to look like ads, causing me to a double take to see if I should be reading it or not. But overall, it’s a worthy redesign, still providing an entertaining read.

Newsweeks’ Oscar Roundtable

Last week, Newsweek posted it’s 11th Annual Oscar Roundtable, which brings together six of the biggest Oscar contenders and has a nice chat with them. The conversation comes in 14 parts, each running anywhere from 2 to 8 minutes, all of them being extremely interesting. This years roundup brought Angelina Jolie, Daniel Day-Lewis, Ellen Page, George Clooney, Marion Cotillard, and James McAvoy.

The conversation goes all over the place, from their first job, politics, and obnoxious neighbors. George Clooney provided the best story of the night, talking about an encounter he had with helicopters flying over his because Britney Spears lives 300 km away from his house. Listening to him tell his stories, it’s very evident how extremely nice and genuine he is. I also learned that every actor in the world is in utter awe of Daniel Day-Lewis and the performances he gives. Definitely worth the hour investment.

The New Yorker’s Eustace Tilley Contest

The New Yorker was (until yesterday at 9 AM) holding a competition to create your own version of the iconic cover character, Eustice Tilly. The contest was open to anyone, and the entries are all pretty great. My favorite one hands down though was the image above, Eustace vs. The Gates. Obviously Christo’s saffron monsters are too much for the dandy, yet he still stands poised as ever behind it.

You can check out the rest of the entires on the New Yorker’s Contest Flickr. Winners of the project will be announced on February 4th.

Chloë Sevigny Interview with Black Book
January 17, 2008 | Categories:
Magazine

Chloë Sevigny has certainly come a long way, from her early days of starring in Harmony Korine films, to the late 90’s where she earned golden globe and academy award nominations for her role in Boys Don’t Cry, to the present where she stars in the show Big Love, playing a wife to a polygamist. You could even say her fame has become meteoric, which seems so weird to me, because I remember her as the girl from Gummo who put tape on her boobs to make them bigger. But now she’s starring in movies with Jake Gyllenahl and representing giant cosmetic companies like MAC. But I think she definitely deserves everything she’s been given, she’s definitely worked hard and has been everywhere.

Black Book just posted a great interview with her, talking a bit about her new line of clothes, nude scenes on Big Love, and her love/hate relationship with Los Angeles:

I lived in Los Angeles for a while, West Hollywood, and it was just miserable. I had these loud, obnoxious lesbian neighbors, who were always playing Trivial Pursuit, yelling answers to each other out the window, screaming. My friends thought I was nuts: “Why are you living there? West Hollywood is for actors who are struggling to make it. You need to get out of there,” which was true. I guess it’s like some actor stepping-stone-something.

Anyway, I was miserable. I rent a house in Los Feliz now, while we’re shooting, a guest house—very small, smaller than my New York apartment. It’s a cabin, really, like 200 square feet, and it has no heat. I’m still paying for it right now actually, because I didn’t want to deal with storage. The house is set into a hill, so I get all these weird underground insects. They come in from the walls. Very, very creepy.

I actually live basically in Los Feliz, in an apartment about that small, so it’s nice to know that if Chloë can do it, so can I, haha…
