The Amazing Photos of Mitchell Feinberg
June 30, 2008 | Categories: Food & Drinks / Magazine / Photography

Making the mundane into something incredible isn’t anything new, but when it looks as delicious as the photos of Mitchell Feinberg, well then you really have something. I knew of Mitch’s photography through my last job, he shared an agent with my old job, but it wasn’t until I was reading in the newest issue of GQ that I was reminded of how amazing he is. He’s basically one of the premiere product photographers in the world. The man has shot just about anything you can think of for about every magazine out there. I personally think what he does is a slice of amazing.
The photos above are from a story titled My Sweet Life, which is basically writer Alan Richamn’s grand ode to all of the amazing types of desserts there are out there. The story is cute and clever and really does cover most any dessert you could think of, but the story is enhanced so very much by Feiberg’s photos. The top photo of the chocolate cake truly looks like heaven in every way, and the pile of California brittle below that makes my mouth water. I’ve put two more photos from the shoot under the cut as well, a root beer float and some beautiful salt water taffy.

Megapuss with Lauren Dukoff at The Hammer
June 19, 2008 | Categories: Art / Los Angeles / Music / Photography

Last night I had the pleasure of going to The Hammer museum for a concert by a band called Megapuss along with the photos of Lauren Dukoff. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, though I know I liked Lauren’s photos, and I had heard rumors that Megapuss was the new side-project of Devendra Banhart. Well it turns out the rumors were true, Devendra, along with Priestbird drummer Greg Rogove and two other fellows (and a harpist for one song), are Megapuss.
The whole thing took place out in the courtyard of The Hammer, which is an absolutely beautiful place to see a concert. They ended up playing for about an hour, playing songs titled things like Duck People Duck Man, Chicken Titties, and Surf. They sounded a lot like Devendra, maybe a little more Beach Boys-esque, but still just as weird and awesome. This was their first show, so they were all over the place, playing a lot of Tears for Fears in-between songs. I also just want to say that Devendra Banhart is the funniest, most charming man alive. His banter was great and he seemed like a very genuine, nice guy. I also spotted Natalie Portman hanging out at the show, and I guess my friend Kelly talked to her about her racist dog. No idea what that means.
Check out Megapuss’ MySpace to get a taste of what’s to come! Also be sure to check under the cut for one more photo I took!

Take Ivy, Photos by T. Hayashida
June 15, 2008 | Categories: Clothing / Photography

I was pouring over the website of amazing menswear company Blackbird when I came across this amazing book called Take Ivy. Take Ivy was the product of Japanese photographer T. Hashiyada, who traveled to America to photograph the fashion of ivy league schools. The result is amazing, a beautiful portrait of fashion in the late sixties. What’s also so remarkable is how much this prep school style is coming back into vogue. I mean, this is pretty much the style I’m personally going for these days, maybe a bit more contemporary, but what’s in these photos is definitely the building blocks of today’s style.
The book was found by Michael Williams over at A Continuous Lean who was awesome enough to scan a ton of the pages from the book. I’ve posted some photos from the book under the cut but you can also see more of Michael’s scans here and here. Also be sure to check out the rest of Michael’s site as well, it’s totally worth a damn and I’ve thrown it into my Daily Sites in the sidebar as well.

Fine Dining Skateboards by Daniel Curtis
June 13, 2008 | Categories: Design / Photography

A lot of the time (like almost always) if someone links to me I visit their site to see what they’re saying. I do this through my Stat Counter, it tells me where all of my hits are coming from, it’s really not that creepy, I promise. But I noticed one that I hadn’t seen before so I went to check it out, and was immediately struck by the awesome decks you see above. Cut to me searching on the internet for like, 30 minutes until I FINALLY came across some information that they were the work of the wonderful Daniel Curtis.
I thought these decks were so rad when I saw them. What he told me was that he drove around town with his little brother in tow, searching for all sorts of junk food. They ended up with all the crap you see above, which Daniel says they ate quite a bit of what you see. After that he couldn’t eat meat for a week, haha… Hands down my favorite is the donuts one, those blue donuts in there are the yummiest looking treats. Sadly the boards aren’t available yet, but they should be around later this month through The Source.
Also take a sneak peek at Daniel’s upcoming clothing line, Bon Voyage, he’s got some rad looking tees!
Advice To Sink In Slowly Postcards
June 8, 2008 | Categories: Art / Design / Illustration / Photography

I usually don’t post often on Sundays but I’ve got too many things that I’ve been meaning to post, so here we go! I posted about Advice To Sink In Slowly a while back, a poster project that was created for the incoming students of the University College Falmouth in England. The posters feature inspirational words of wisdom created by alumni for the incoming students, which is a great idea because I’ve seen a lot of very blank, boring dorm rooms before.
Well they’ve now expanded their awesome line of posters into a set of postcards, which look really great. The cover was created by the awesome guys over at Telegramme, and the book features 24 different designs to fit whoever you’re sending them to. The pack runs about $12, so get off your email and send some real mail!

The Milky Way Is Awesome
June 4, 2008 | Categories: Photography / Science / Technology

Seriously though, space is the place. I was reading an article over on Wired and in traditional me fashion, I end up straying somewhere else following a link and stumble on something else that gets me all excited. The photo above is a photo of The Milky Way viewed from the Kofa Mountains in Arizona, and it’s one of those things you see and you can’t believe it’s real. I honestly can’t think of anything more awesome than this. If you asked me who would win in a fight, I would bet The Milky Way over anyone or anything else, that’s just how bad-ass that galaxy is.
I tweaked the photo some to make it a little bit more dramatic, so if you’d like to see the original you can click here. There’s also a complete picture of the entire Milky Way Galaxy on there as well, so check that out too.

Jacob Sutton

I was checking out the online portfolio of British photographer Jacob Sutton and I was immediately impressed. I tried to find more info about him but Google wasn’t very helpful and his rep’s site is a Flash mess that had no bio, or at least not one I could see. But looking through his work you can definitely see that this guy is insane amounts of creativity and a serious knack for dramatic lighting. He shoots mostly editorial work, so he’s got a ton of different fun shoots with all sorts of things going on.
I really like his work for Mixte Magazine, which is the photo with the pink dust all around. It seems like such a simple idea but it looks amazing. I love how you can see all the particles and bits, I’m sure seeing these really large and up close they would be even better. He’s got a lot of work, so be sure to check out his site for more visual goodness.

Going On by Gnarls Barkely
June 2, 2008 | Categories: Blogs / Music Video / Photography
I saw this a couple weeks ago but I thought I’d post it because it makes for a good later night post. This the new Gnarls Barkley video for the song, Going On, definitely one of the best tracks off the new album. What I think is so cool about this video is that it was totally inspired by Clayton Cubitt’s Lagos Calling series, which he notes in his blog. But Clayton is so rad about the situation that he calls it a “lovely happenstance”, something I think very few people would do.
I think the imagery definitely works for the song and the video, and even though it could be called a rip off, a topic I am definitely not fond of, I think they do the idea a great deal of justice. The desaturated colors with the bold yellow fonts, the fast-paced dancing in the street… I’m totally into it. Well, except for the end, that effect in the door frame looks ridiculous, haha…

New Mcginley Inspired Sigur Ros Video for Gobbledigook
May 27, 2008 | Categories: Art / Music / Music Video / Photography

Holy crap. Out of nowhere Sigur Ros just released this new single and video for a song called Gobbledigook, an Animal Collective-esque song that makes me really frigging excited for their new album, Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust (With A Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly). Yeah, seriously, that’s what it’s called.
But what really takes the cake is how awesome the music video is! It was directed by Arni & Kinski, and inspired by Ryan McGinley who I guess also collaborated on the video. To me that sounds like they asked him if they could shoot in his style so he wouldn’t sue them and he said yes, haha… Anyhow, the video, in classic McGinley fashion, features a bunch of hot, young things running around naked in the woods. It’s not shot quite like a McGinley photo, but I think the essence is there at the very least. I think combined with the song it’s particularly amazing, definitely pretty fun and out there.
If you’re at work, you probably shouldn’t watch it, as there are boobs and weens ALL OVER the place in this video, so that’s you’re warning. But I highly suggest sneaking behind your bosses and co-workers back and watching it, it’s damn beautiful and the song is way fun. I mean, it’s artsy nudes, they’re not having sex, so whatevs.

Alex Prager
May 26, 2008 | Categories: Photography

Last week my buddy Eric gave me a heads up about this photographer Alex Prager, so I checked out her site, and was totally stunned. ALex works in Los Angeles, shooting photos that are extremely retro in their styling, but modern in their execution. Imagine the set of The Birds, or an episode of The Wonder Years, but shot in this weird, almost Stepford Wives kind of way. It’s kind of like she crafted a bunch of personas from different pieces of characters in films and then photographed it. The colors are bright, but somewhat desaturated and definitely surreal.
The top image reminds of a somewhere between The Birds and Jaws, you don’t know whether or not the threat is going to come from above or below, either way she’s totally screwed. The bottom photo makes me think of Dali Atomicus, which captures Dali jumping in the air, cats and water flying by and the easel and other furniture are starting to float. They’re both very out there, but really fun.
