I can’t believe it’s already Friday. This week moved by so quickly and so many great/busy things happened that it flew by. Thankfully I have a couple of huge things to show for it, which hopefully in the next couple months I’ll be able to share.

For this week’s Mixcast I decided to go with a mini-mix format again, so you’ve got a hair over 40 minutes of music to listen to. What’s the theme you ask? Icelandic and Japanese musicians with a Swede and a Belgian thrown in for good measure. This is honestly what I’ve been listening to for the past week or so anyhow, they just happen to fall into those two main groups rather well.

The artwork was inspired by their countries, sorta, so I just went with simplicity. The woodgrain and pinkish red color remind me of Japan while the pattern is something that you might see on a sweater in Iceland… sound good?

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Carry Me Up To Smell Pine by Sin Fang Bous
Running Mates by The Go Find
Brand New Season by Cornelius
Við Spilum Endalaust by Sigur Rós
If It Is Growing by Fanfarlo
In The Park by Teruyuki Nobuchika
Cat Piano by Seabear
Til Eru Fr by Beni Hemm Hemm

It’s Friday, it’s almost the weekend, and here’s a delicious Mixcast to wash your cares away. This week’s Mixcast is based around the theme of women’s names. I think most rock stars end up going through break ups or fall desperately in love so women’s names tend to be quite prevalent in music. Not that there are only male singers on this album.

For the album artwork I hunted through my old National Geographic’s and found as many odd images as I could, putting together a diverse collage of woman-ness. The back is my favorite though and I didn’t have to do anything to it, that’s exactly how it was.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Jolene by Cake
Griselda by Yo La Tengo
Vanessa From Queens by Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks
Ashley by The Dodos
Tila and I by Harlem
Dear Jennifer by The Clientele
Selfish Jean by Travis
Oh Christine by The Cave Singers
Pretty Mary K by Elliott Smith
Carey by Joni Mitchell
Savannah Smiles by Okkervil River
Anna by Taken by Trees
Shirin by Jens Lekman
Ada by The National
Goodnight Laura by Spoon

For this week’s Mixcast I asked my Twitter friends for theme suggestions, as my brain wasn’t working properly at the time. I got a lot off great responses (the most popular was cover songs) but one caught my creativity the most. It was from @iptydafu who suggested: “Build to Look Back” Love lost to the future.”

I don’t exactly know what they meant by that, but I interpreted it as man who’s lost the woman he loves in a time-traveling accident. I know, I’m weird. So what became of that was a tripped out love album filled with space-y sounding jams and nods to the future. There are fast, guitar driven songs, there are quiet, thoughtful ones, and pretty much everything in between. Some songs were used in the background as filler, some aren’t even full songs, and most of the time you probably won’t even know when a song transitions from one to another.

I should also mention this is a mini-mix. It’s 35 minutes of straight music, no talking, I didn’t want to ruin the flow of it all. I think one of my favorite parts is the transition between Dert Is Full of Love and A Guitar and a Heart, when I throw in a random ass sample that some of you may recognize. I was even able to throw in some Postal Service, which I never thought I’d be able to do, but I think it finishes things off nicely.

And for those who are curious, the covers are made up of the following:
- A woman using a loom.
- Coral.
- Marble quarry.
- Sea creature.

I think you’ll really enjoy this mixtape, it definitely has a little something for everyone.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Global (Heart) Warming by Montag
You Can’t Go Home Again by DJ Shadow
She’s The One by Beta Band
Dert Is Full of Love by Dert
A Guitar and a Heart by M83

Evil by The Flaming Lups
Solastalgia by Zero 7
Yours Truly, 2095 by The Silent League
A Little Longing Goes Away by The Books

Natural Anthem by Postal Service

Last week we took a look into the future, at the new music coming out in 2010. This week we’re going back to the 90’s. I’ve put together a collection of my favorite one-hit wonders from the 90’s, the things that songs that never really propelled bands to stardom but found a tender a place in my heart. I tried to pick the more obscure bands and songs, so hopefully this brings back some memories for you.

For the cover art I tried to recreate the Saved By The Bell logo with a Kitsune Noir spin. I hand drew the type and then traced it all out in (my enemy) Illustrator then put it all together in Photoshop. It’s insane just how janky that title is. I know it looks like I did a shitty job but go look at the original and you’ll see just how horribly designed it is.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Female of the Species by Space
In The Meantime by Spacehog
I Could Never Be Your Woman by White Town
Desperately Wanting by Better Than Ezra
Breakfast At Tiffany’s by Deep Blue Something
Bound for the Floor by Local H
Super Bon Bon by Soul Coughing
Radiation Vibe by Fountains of Wayne

Happy New Year! It’s 2010 so I thought I’d share some brand new, fresh outta’ the oven music with you. All of the songs on this week’s Mixcast come from artists who have brand new albums coming out in 2010… okay, except Charlotte Gainsbourg. I totally fucked up and thought her album came out in 2010 and I didn’t realize that it came out last December until I was midway through recording. It’s still a really great song, so just enjoy it!

This year should be a great year for music if the following list is any kind of indication. Is there anything else coming out that you’re excited for? Off the top of my head I can think of Arcade Fire and The Books.

Here’s this week’s tracklist:
Boy Lilikoi by Jónsi
Lewis Takes Off His Shirt by Owen Pallett
Love Me Girl by Yeasayer
Thanks Vision by Toro Y Moi
Psyche by Massive Attack
Written In Reverse by Spoon
Lover of Mine by Beach House
Mongrel Heart by Broken Bells
Taxi Cab by Vampire Weekend
La Collectionneue by Charlotte Gainsbourg
Don’t Call Me Uncle by Adam Green
Fortune by Midlake
