The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring Alex Mathers
February 10, 2010 // The Desktop Wallpaper Project

It’s a little late in the day for the wallpaper, but sleep was more important last night. This week we have a very busy and talented young dude from the UK named Alex Mathers. Alex is all over the place these days. You might find him creating illustrations for his personal site, or writing about interesting art and design on his blog Ape on the Moon, or on Red Lemon Club, a site that’s dedicated to helping freelance creative types promote themselves and their work. Clearly he’s got a lot on his plate, but somehow he manages to make it all work.

Yet amid his busy schedule he was able to create the rad wallpaper you see above. I”m not 100% sure what it mens exactly but it sure is cool looking. I really love all of the colors and the wave patterns which appear all over. Thanks again Alex for the wallpaper.

Fax Shadow by Toro Y Moi

Good Wednesday morning. A little while back I got an email from a very unlikely source, someone I never thought I’d hear from because it would just be too random, but that’s the fun of having a design blog. It was from a guy named Chaz Bundick, who some of you may know as the musical artist Toro Y Moi. You’ll recognize his music name if you’ve listened to my Mixcasts or follow what I’m listening to on #musicmonday. I’ve been a fan of his for a long time now so I’m pretty stoked to have him participate in the DWP.

Yesterday, Toro Y Moi had his second album released called Causers Of This, and it’s definitely one of my favorites of the year. It’s kind of electronic, kind of J Dilla inspired and all around laid back and a solid album all around. So he decided to send two images for wallpapers, and I think they sum up his style pretty well. They have this washed out kind of ethereal vibe that floats through his music. Plus I think the colors and textures are awesome, I already have the top image set as my iPhone background.

I’ve also included a few MP3s from Causers Of This, Fax Shadow and Thanks Vision, so you can get a taste of what he sounds like. I highly recommend you picking up this album. You can grab it over on Insound or iTunes, whatever you prefer.

This isn’t going to be the last music related wallpaper either, I’m gonna try and branch out and get more of my favorite musicians to do some like Lady Gaga, Bono and Guns and Roses…

The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring Matthew Lyons
January 27, 2010 // The Desktop Wallpaper Project

A couple of weeks ago we had a really wonderful wallpaper by Matt Lyon, and in a bizarre turn of events this week we have Matthew Lyons. They’re two very different fellows but both extremely talented. This week’s Matthew you may remember from a couple weeks ago when I posted about his extremely rad work. Since then we’ve chatted and I asked him if he would do a desktop wallpaper for you, and he graciously obliged.

Matthew told me that he made this wallpaper to burn my eyes out, after I told him I preferred darker wallpapers. He also called me a “goth man”, haha… Anyhow, he wrote me that he wanted to create “a robot who is terminating all quarms and turmoils that he has in life by steadily cruise controlling tranquil barren land.” I think that he’s more than accomplished that, and I think his wallpaper is one of my favorites of the last two years. Thanks again Matthew, you big jerk…

The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring Script & Seal
January 20, 2010 // The Desktop Wallpaper Project

Good morning from soggy Los Angeles. I hope you’re having a good week so far, and hopefully the wallpapers above will make it even better. This weeks wallpapers come from Script & Seal, which is made up of Gavin Potenza and Liz Meyer. They’ve joined forces to battle the art world and create beautiful images (as you can see above). They’re also in the process of updating their site with new work, so be sure to check back frequently.

For their wallpapers, they tried to go for “a theme of classic, refined, grayscale.”
“We definitely had a lot of influences including mysticism, symbolism and foreign but familiar.” Gavin says his wallpaper didn’t really have any deep meaning but Liz describes her’s as “the art of finding knowledge.”

“I wanted it to look like a snapshot from the 1940’s (like a black & white UFO photo) — like a fleeting moment of finding something special hanging in the sky.”

I think they’re really awesome. I love all the symbols and different textures they both used. You could definitely set these both as your wallpaper and let them cycle back and forth. I also want to give a shout out to Sarah, who I think will love these because she’s a dznr/hippie chick.

The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring C86 / Matt Lyon
January 13, 2010 // The Desktop Wallpaper Project

Hey-o, hope you’re having a nice morning so far. This week’s wallpaper comes from Uk illustrator and one of my favorites right now, Matt Lyon aka C86 aka Matt Lyon. Matt popped up on my radar a few months back and I’ve been digging his style since then. He does a lot of really random, abstract shapes and somehow molds them into these large, beautiful pieces filled with color and textures.

This week’s wallpaper is no different as you can see, filled with what look like (at least to me) little castles in the sky. I feel like the mixture of bright and dull colors really make these neat, and it’s fun to try and follow all the little paths going everywhere.
