Filming Myself in the Snow
February 18, 2010 // Transportation + Video
The other day I got an email from a guy named Stebs Schinnerer, who was writing to tell me that he filmed himself doing some tricks on his bike in the middle of the snow in Massachusetts. On the video description it says that it took him about 3 hours to shoot and edit the entire video… which was done by just himself. That’s right, he shot it, he edited it, and he rode around the snow.
The video itself, while simple, is shot really beautifully. There’s kind of a quiet beauty to the video, with Mr. Schinnerer cruising around to the sound of Efterklang’s Mirador. He did an amazing job of editing the video together and creating a look and feel. The contrast was amped up and the color desaturated, giving the video look even chillier. It would be really great if more people could do small, beautiful projects like these in only three hours.

Noby Noby Boy for the iPhone
February 18, 2010 // Apple + Video
I’m not sure if you’d heard, but Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi has released his latest game Noby Noby Boy on the iPhone, and boy is it weird. You basically control this little turd guy, making him stretch and interact with all kinds of weird objects. I downloaded the game last night and I’m not sure I’ve discovered the point of it…. if it even has one.
I think it’s interesting that the game really doesn’t have a point, that’s it’s just entertaining, especially for kids. To promote the game they’ve made a series of trailers showing the characters in a board room talking about the game and giving you a preview of it as well. Like I said, it’s totally weird, but worth checking out.

The Desktop Wallpaper Project featuring Ciara Phelan
February 17, 2010 // The Desktop Wallpaper Project

Good morning, I hope you’re having a good day so far. I’m writing this from a hotel in San Francisco today, which is quite a change of scenery but I couldn’t be happier. For today’s wallpaper we have something a little different, a beautiful paper cut collage by the amazing Ciara Phelan. Ciara is a designer currently living in London where she’s been creating this intricate, hand-cut collages that are both playful and extremely colorful.
I really thought that her desktop wallpaper went well with the things I’ve posted over the last few days so I thought I’d share it today. I love the color palette on this one, I think it’ll work great as a wallpaper. Not too flashy and distracting but with a few splashes of color and some nice textures to give it some pop. A big thanks to Ciara for sending me such a rad wallpaper!

Criminals by Atlas Sound
Last year when I made my best songs of the year Mixcast I probably should have included a few more songs. But it was a rather lengthy mix, so it was probably best that I chose to edit a few out. But if there’s one that I really regret leaving out it would be Atlas Sound’s Criminals. The song comes off of his album Logos which is a totally amazing album, but I’ve been listening to it a lot lately and Criminals keeps popping into my head.
So I thought I’d share this live version of the song which was recorded by Southern Shelter on New Years Eve last year. The performance is one of my favorites and I love how it turned out. There are some annoying people talking during the performance but listen in the background for the keyboard kind of sounds and the harmonica, definitely makes the song even better.

Scout Books
February 17, 2010 // Design + Illustration

My friend Frank Chimero filled me in on a little project he had been working on a couple weeks ago and it’s finally seeing the light of day. Scout Books is a little company started by Pinball Publishing who began creating these Field Notes-esque notepads last year but have teamed up with artists like Frank to create an artist series. Frank’s design is the one on the right and funny enough is called Muttnik, which was a nickname for Laika, the first dog in space. Next month is going to feature Mike Perry, so we should be in for some treats throughout the year.
What’s also fun is that you can create your own notebooks and they’re pretty dang cheap. You can get 50 made for $195, so around $4 each. Think about selling each for $10 and you’re more than doubling your profit, nice, huh? Lots of really rad notebooks to check out so get clicking!
