Curious Displays by Julia Yu Tsao
March 4, 2010 // Technology

I’m a sucker for futuristic devices that could make our day-to-day a little bit easier, and these Curious Display definitely seem like a great idea. Created by Julia Yu Tsao, these tiny robots feature vibrant displays on their backs, and cluster together like ants or bees, helping each other out to create messages, locate items or even transform into a display to watch movies (I don’t use the word “television” anymore, it’s really not very true anymore, especially in this case).

I love the idea of having these little robotic helpers basically giving me status updates in real life. It’s the idea of bridging the digital and physical world that I find so interesting. And if they’re adaptable, say being able to climb up walls or transform to complete a particular task, then that makes them all the more valuable. A really great idea which I’d love to start seeing more of.

‘En Vill Hest’ by Casiokids
March 4, 2010 // Music + Music Video

I think continuing the weird vibe of Wednesday into Thursday would definitely be appropriate, so here’s a little video for the Norwegian band Casiokids and their song En Vill Hest. First off the song is really great, it’s very much like an 80’s gem with kind of a Caribbean (?) kind of feel to it, the whole thing being sung in Norwegian and sounds awesome.

The video itself is pretty funny and weird, which was directed by Kristoffer Borgli. I always love watching other people dance, and this video doesn’t fail me. The whole vibe is kind of this creepy Knife/Fever Ray kind of thing, but with an 80’s teen flick vibe to it. Is the statue possessed? Did he destroy the demon that came to his house? Is he just on drugs?! Totally fun little video for a great track.

The Desktop Wallpaper Project by Agata Nowicka
March 3, 2010 // The Desktop Wallpaper Project

Hey-o it’s Wednesday so I’ve got a brand new wallpaper and this week’s is really great. It comes all the way from Warsaw, Poland was created by a lovely lady named Agata Nowicka. Ms. Nowicka has this really amazing kind of pixelated style that’s very realistic but still very playful at the same time. She basically creates the kind of stuff you wish you could have made when you were using Paint as a 6th grader, she’s on another level.

For her wallpaper she went totally weird, and I think it fits in with some of today’s posts quite well. Your guess is as good as mine as to what it means, but basically you’ve got a woman trying to get dressed but her dresser is filled with all kinds of slimy sea creatures! And just to get the joke out of the way, there appears to not be any crabs…

Museum of Modern (Celebrity) Tweets
March 3, 2010 // Illustration

I can’t remember how I found out about The Museum of Modern Tweets, but it’s one of the weirdest/best things I’ve come across in a while. The illustrator and designer, Odessa Begay, started illustrating tweets from celebrities, but imagined them in a very different way then they were probably meant to be.

My two favorites are above, just for the amount of creativity it must have taken to really a) find these tweets, and b) create the bizarre images that go with them. I kinda’ hope that Nick Jonas does own a rocket pack and a pony that eats bundles of cash.

Stephen Eichhorn’s Cats & Plants
March 3, 2010 // Art

You might remember artist Stephen Eichhorn from this video I posted a while back, he was the guy who made these huge images out of plants cut from magazines…? Well I’ve been keeping tabs on Stephen (through Flickr only, of course) and he’s taken his love of plants and applied them to… cats. From here on out the rest of the days posts gets weird, there’s no turning back.

There’s really no info on this project, not that there needs to be, it’s just a hysterical combination of weird plants and cacti and succulents mixed together with kitties. Don’t even think about it, just absorb the oddness and accept it.
