Vertical Newspaper
November 5, 2009 // Design
Newspapers are certainly in a state of flux, I’m not sure if they’re on their way out quite yet, but things are definitely not looking good. The Telegraaf Media Groep from the Netherlands has something new they want to try with newspapers. It’s a vertical newspaper, which unlike traditional newspapers you turn the page from bottom to top and vice versa.
This seems like such a no brainer idea, the amount of space you could save could really be beneficial. But I also think this guy is really funny, really trying to push the idea of how revolutionary the vertical newspaper is. He almost reminds me of a character in a Charlie Kaufman screenplay, which to me is somewhat endearing.

Bobby,
Super-interesting post. Have you seen this TED spot on this Polish guy that’s redesigned newspapers to increase circulation? It’s a great idea and I love his sense of design. Your post reminded me of it…

I think the newspapers are in a similar situation than the books and cds. Even when I’m one of those romantics that still buys cds, vinyls, books and newspapers i don’t see a clear future for this “old” things, but I hope they last some more time. There’s nothing more exciting than taking the paper off a brand new vinyl or cd, or the smell of a new book or even the feeling of tha paper and ink in your fingertips while you’re reading the news whit a nice cup of coffee on the mornings.

Nice idea, but I’m a bit emberassed about the way this man talks English. It’s a shame for most of the dutch people. In Holland we say: “He’s talking steenkolen engels”. Literly: “charcoal english”. But anyway I hope this will be the new way of reading a paper, this is much easier than the tabloid version. Not forget to mention that the tabloid version is pretty good by itselves.
