‘Never Let You Go’ (SGIN)

Jorge Elbrecht of Violens and Caroline Polachek of Chairlift have devised a rather ingenious concept whereby they compose “an original song written specifically to synch into someone else’s video on mute.” The result is a “sgin”, an anagram for “sing.” As part of the process, they searched YouTube for one of the highest-ranking videos and came across Justin Bieber’s “Never Let You Go.”
Somewhere between my second and twentieth listen, I proclaimed Elbrecht and Polachek’s “sgin” the best thing since sliced bread. As much as I am blown away by the manner in which they have carefully synched their thematically incongruous lyrics (“You stupid slut/Corrupted”) with Bieber’s lip movements, the song stands on its own as a musical gem.
If you are, understandably, a little turned off by watching a prepubescent boy with perfectly coiffed hair crooning to a young girl, Elbrecht and Polachek’s song is also available for download on the Violens myspace.

Abso-frakking-loutely brilliant. This is the first time ive watched a Bieber video in its entirety – if this is how the music really was I would watch much more. Such a great idea…

I love near the end how they start sticking in stupid sound effects like his sneakers squeaking on the floor and her making a little smoochy sound.

mort goldman It is strangely hypnotic and addictive…
saer It was my first time watching a full Bieber video too…I nearly died when I watched the original. Everything just seemed so wrong.
Ryan I agree – the layers of audio are fantastic!
José Luis Haha – yes, definitely download the track if you’re freaked out by watching Justin :)
